The urban area of metropolitan cities like Seoul is demanding the space which can accommodate multiple applications to meet a wide range of supply and demand by urban functions. For reflecting this phenomenon, buildings are developed as vertical shape focusing on three-dimensional and purpose to mixed-use. The value of vertical mixed-use building is formed by a relationship with the regional environment where the building is located. In this aspect, buildings in the urban area contain a specific space, called ‘Pilotis’, which is constructed by pillars only without rooms.
The representative building with pilotis in the downtown of Seoul is Nak-won shopping centre, which is one of the first generations of mixed-use buildings in Korea. As time goes on, Nak-won shopping centre has become an outdated image even though its continuous maintenance process. Besides, the vast space of pilotis has a harmful condition due to the influence of vehicles such as parking lots and extension of the road named ‘Sam-il-ro’. Moreover, the adjacent area and pedestrian environment are also inadequate. Therefore this research suggests the architectural direction of pilotis space with proposals to solve social problems through analysing the current situation of Nak-won shopping centre.
