In modern society, rapid and dense population has led many cities to arise various social problems such as neglected infrastructure, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution. As a result, the backwardness phenomenon in the old city centre has exposed diverse forms of brownfield in urban areas so that it is urgent to prepare measures at the local level mostly, also considerable at the national and regional levels. Accordingly, this research aims at academically understanding the present and future possibility of urban regeneration on brownfield, especially focusing on the European context. The research result can be a theoretical background for other metropolitan cities in the world.
This research seeks to analyse contemporary implemented cases in two European re-presentative and metropolitan cities, Berlin in Germany and Vienna in Austria, as well as consists mainly of three parts. First, it looks at urban regeneration as a countermeasure to improve brownfield. Second, it traces the target cases carefully for securing considerable implications toward other metropolitan cities in the world. Third, it critically reviews urban regeneration on brownfield in the European perspective and categorises the target cases by the sustainability objectives of the European Union project titled RESCUE.
